The Centro de Biotecnología y Genómica de Plantas (CBGP), a joint research centre between the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria y Alimentaria (INIA) and located at the International Campus of Excellence Montegancedo, has been selected as an Excellence Research Centre by the Severo Ochoa Programme, which is promoted by the Secretary of State of Research, Development and Innovation of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.

This recognition of the CBGP (UPM-INIA) research excellence is valid for four years and will bring an additional income of a million euros per year to the centre, that will allow to CBGP researchers the access to new scientific infrastructures, to attract young researchers and scientific talent, and to initiate new research programmes aiming to provide fundamental knowledge and solutions to get a more sustainable agricultural production and to improve food quality.

The objective of the Severo Ochoa Programme is to identify and promote research centres in Spain that have already positioned themselves among the best in the world in their speciality, and to support competitive science and excellent research taking place in Spain. The centres are selected by independent scientific committees made up of internationally renowned researchers.
