EU R&D Framework programme (Horizon 2020)

H2020

What is Horizon 2020?

The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation is the major R&D funding program in the European Union. The programme covering the period 2014-2020 is called Horizon 2020 and has been granted with an EU investment of nearly 80,000 million euros. It is structured in 3 pillars:

  1. Pillar 1: Excellence Science - Activities under this Pillar aim to reinforce and extend the excellence of the Union’s science base and to consolidate the European Research Area in order to make the Union’s research and innovation system more competitive on a global scale. The objectives of pillar 1 are:
    • reinforce and expand the excellence of the European scientific base by supporting the best ideas within Europe
    • provide researchers with access to priority research infrastructures
    • position Europe as an attractive place for the best researchers in the world.
  2. Pillar 2: Industrial Leadership - This pillar aims to accelerate the development of technologies and innovations that will underpin tomorrow's companies and help innovative European SMEs to become world leading companies.
  3. Pillar 3: Social challenges - Pillar 3 responds to the seven main challenges of European and world society identified as priorities. In each challenge, multidisciplinary projects are financed integrating different technologies and solutions (including Information and Communication Technologies) that contribute to solving the social and economic needs of each subject.
