The main goal of this project is to improve the use e!ciency of the natural resources and to improve the profitability of the agriculture through the use of new technologies of information. Specifically the objective of this project is the development and evaluation of a methodology to determine and optimize the use of water resources in the agriculture using spatially distributed information. The central hypothesis of the project is that spatially distributed information obtained from remote sensing and improved through images fusion with algorithm that define the surface energy balance can be used to determine and to optimize water demand in the irrigated agriculture. The scientific community agrees that probably only with the use of remote sensors it is possible to obtain information spatially distributed at a farm and regional scale of the use of water resources. For the accomplishment of this project the University of Concepcion possesses a recognized background and experience in similar projects in the area of the agricultural water resources. There is a strong institutional support in this line associated with ?Chile-California: association for XXI century? plan, that the Chilean Government establish in 2008 and the agreement with the University of California from the development of scientific and technical research as well as, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, besides other projects associated with the determination and the management of the water resources nowadays in execution. An international and interdisciplinary team with wide experience has been conformed and new researchers have been incorporated. Researchers of the Universities of California in USA, Technical University of Madrid, University of Cordova in Spain, University of Hannover in Germany and the National Institute of Research of Chile will be part of the sta". The project team will be reinforced by professionals and technical personnel of the companies and organizations associated with the project, this guarantees that the information will be transferred adequately to the final users.
