For companies trying to commercialize concentration PV systems, it has raised an important need for a tool to characterize their electrical and optical performance on the production line, i.e. a solar simulator. Limited angular acceptance of a CPV systems make conventional solar simulators not usable, because a light source with the same angular size as that of the sun is necessary. At IES-UPM it has been developed a solar simulator solving this, by means of a special optical element that produces the desired parallel light beam for the whole area of the receiver. This element transforms the divergent light rays coming from a point source into a collimated beam. The characterization carried out for this system (i.e. irradiance level and uniformity, spectral distribution and light beam divergence demonstrates that it is applicable for main CPV technologies. Besides, its validity has been confirmed practically with the comparative measurement of two different PV concentrators (FLATCON and TIR-R modules) under solar simulator and real sun conditions, which have achieved a close fit | |
