An ED- tether is a conductive wire orbiting in a planet with magnetized plasma (actually, just Earth and Jupiter), keeping taut by either gravity gradient or applied spin, and exchanging current with the ambient plasma. A bare ED tether carries no insulation so as to collect current as a giant Langmuir probe. Tethers are typically tens of kilometers long and less than centimeter thick. The planetary magnetic field both induces current in the tether and exerts force on it. Objectives of this project are 1) determining whether a bare ED-tether might resolve several specific issues facing future missions to Jupiter; 2) exploring some scientific experiments that might be carried out with tethers in Jupiter; 3) solve standing issues in the theory of current collection by tethers; 4) designing experiments that tethers might allow carrying out in Low Earth Orbit.
