Universal Networking Language (UNL) was launched by the Institute of Advanced Studies of the United Nations University for the facilitation of multilanguage and multiethnic access to communication networks such as WWW. UNL is used to support different types of applications, from multilingual generation to abstracting and cross-lingual information retrieval. The main representation unit of UNL is a graph formed of UNL lexical nodes, semantic relations and attributes. One of the important features of UNL is the fact that a graph may contain hypernodes, i.e. connected subgraphs that function as single nodes. We describe properties of hypernodes and present some linguistic phenomena for which they can be used. | |
