In the current context of changing climate, increasing water scarcity threatens economic activities in many arid regions of the World. In the Spanish Guadiana river basin, agriculture consumes around 90% of water resources, and adaptation to water scarcity seems crucial for this sector. The Water Framework Directive poses a difficult challenge on the water authority that must ensure the maintenance of environmental flows while protecting rural livelihoods. In this situation improved knowledge on impacts, vulnerability and adaptive capacity is required. The objective of the paper is to analyze the economic impact of water conservation policies, to assess the different vulnerability of farmers to water scarcity and to identify key variables contributing to vulnerability. | |
