New requirements derived from international legislation, Unites Nations Regulations and European Commission Directive amongst other, have recently come into force for Buses and Coaches (Large passenger vehicles LPVs). One of the most exigent requirements these vehicles is the applied to the strength of the superstructure to roll-over, by means of Regulation 66 of Geneva. This Regulation has introduced, in its Revision 01, the contribution of the mass of belted passengers to the kinetic energy of the vehicle when its can rail impact the floor. The result of this Revision of the regulation is that the requirement of energy absorption capability for the superstructure has increased between 25% and 35% depending on the vehicle configuration. This legal requirement, jointly considered with the trend to reduce vehicle mass in order to minimize fuel consumptions, has opened a window to the application of High tech material, specially composite, to the structure of these vehicles. | |
