A methodology is described for understanding the interaction of karstic aquifers with allogenic rivers under a natural regime, where little information is available. This methodology includes conventional hydrogeological methods, tracer tests and measurements of surface flow into and out of the karstic system, and circulating within it (rivers). The methodology is designed to provide a sufficiently detailed model of hydrological behaviour over a short period, with the aim of making an initial estimate of the vulnerability to pollution. The methodology has been applied to a Spanish karstic system obtaining useful, quantitative results for a hydrological year. These include confirmation of the recharge area, types of response curves, velocity of groundwater flow circulation and variation in groundwater flow (according to the hydrometeorological regime and proximity to the discharge point of the aquifer), relationship and connection between the river and the aquifer. The paper provides a useful example that could be applied to other aquifers where little data is available. | |
