| The study is aimed to quantify and assess the social and functional impact that the implementation of specific measures - the construction of two specific cycle routes in the Madrid city center - will have on cycling demand, on neighbors and on users of the affected areas. The procedure for achieving the objective is to test before implementing the measures in the routes under consideration, the appropriate variables on the following aspects: ? attitudes toward the use of bicycles as a mode of transport. ? perceptions and assessments of the current state of the conditions for cycling and the prospects for improvement. ? willingness to change habitual mode. Results highlight how, in general, regular cyclists hold a more positive valuations of bicycle features as a mode of transport, compared to regular users of other modes. The degree of difficulty perceived by respondents to use the bicycle for their movements is higher, the lower the overall indicator of attitude toward cycling use. Analyzing the differences between regular users and non-users the results show that the factors commonly reported as barriers to the use of this mode (the sweat, the adverse weather, specific traffic skills, fitness, long distances, hilly terrain, etc.). appear to be a result of not having any practical experience of cycling itself. Other factors (exposure on pollution, the presence of complementary facilities, the aggressiveness of motorized traffic, the risk of accidents, etc..) do seem to be more definitive regarding the choice of cycling as a usual mode. Willingness to change habitual mode in the future is also very influenced by the current usage habits. | |
