Descripción
Over-all objective: To deliver increased knowledge of the epidemiology and economic impact of Pepino mosaic virus in the EU context, such that an updated rigorous pest risk analysis can be performed to underpin the existing legislation and to help the consideration of any necessary amendments. The main scientific and technical objective of this work is to develop a robust Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) to determine the risk to European protected tomato crops posed by PepMV, which is currently the subject of EU emergency measures. In order to achieve this, there is a need to: · Assess the economic impact that PepMV can have on commercial tomato crops grown under different climatic and cultural conditions. This will be achieved by completing commercial glasshouse trials at four geographically distinct ocations within the EU using a standardized variety and a tandardized tomato isolate of the virus. The results will be used to assess the economic impact of PepMV in different geographical locations and at different industry standards. · Examine the threat of new virus genotypes by conducting studies on the effects that these new variants and strains have on tomato plant and other agronómically important Solanaceous crops. · Obtain new scientific data and use these in conjunction with the existing data to further our understanding of disease epidemiology by studying the incidence of different PepMV isolates and strains over Europe and determining the risk of virus transmission through seeds. · Model the potential impact PepMV could have on the European tomato ndustry should this pathogen become established; · Finally, harmonised risk management strategies and contingency plans are required to deal with this pathogen within the EU. This will be achieved through the development of a standardized EPPO detection protocol for use by NPPOs, inspection services and industry.
