Transversegallopingisatypeofaeroelasticinstabilitycharacterisedbylargeamplitude, low frequencyoscillationofastructureinthedirectionnormaltothemeanwind direction.Itnormallyappearsinbodieswithsmallstiffnessandstructuraldamping, providedtheincidentflowvelocityishighenough.Inthesimplestapproachtransverse gallopingcanbeconsideredasaone-degree-of-freedomoscillatorsubjectedto aerodynamicforces,whichinturncanbedescribedbyusingaquasi-steadydescription. In thisframeithasbeendemonstratedthathysteresisphenomenaintransverse gallopingisrelatedtotheexistenceofinflectionpointsinthecurvegivingthe dependencewiththeangleofattackoftheaerodynamiccoefficientnormaltothe incidentflow.Aimingatexperimentallycheckingsucharelationshipbetweenthese inflectionpointsandhysteresis,windtunnelexperimentshavebeenconducted. Experimentshavebeenrestrictedtoisoscelestriangularcross-sectionbodies,whose gallopingbehaviouriswelldocumented.Experimentalresultsshowthat,accordingto theoreticalpredictions,hysteresistakesplaceattheanglesofattackwherethereare inflectionpointsintheliftcoefficientcurve,providedthatthebodyispronetogallopat these anglesofattack. | |
