Descripción
The Designation of Origin Arribes (thereinafter DO Arribes) extends along the left bank of the Douro River through the Spanish provinces of Salamanca and Zamora, in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. DO Arribes covers an area of 101,880 hectares, of which less than 2,800 are under vines. The main objective of this study is the comparison between two of the most widespread methodologies of climate zoning in viticulture today. Firstly, the methodology proposed by Tonietto and Carbonneau [1], which allows us to compare the climate of vineyards of vine-growing regions worldwide on a macroclimate scale, has been applied. On the other hand, the second methodology followed in this study is the one used by Gómez-Miguel and Sotés in viticultural zonings carried out in Spain [2], which enables the establishment of subzones within each region based on their mesoclimate variability. In the particular case of DO Arribes, results obtained by both methods are absolutely consistent and complementary. The adopted zoning splits DO Arribes in 4 Zones (A, B, C, D), each being characterized by a viticultural climate that corresponds to 4 different vine-growing regions described by Tonietto and Carbonneau. The average viticultural climate of DO Arribes matches the viticultural climate of Zone B, which represents 29.2% of the total area. According to the method of Gómez-Miguel and Sotés, Zone B is the most suitable grape-growing area in the region with 39.8% of the total vineyards. Results obtained in DO Arribes encourage to rely on the suitability of using both methodologies together in subsequent studies in other viticultural regions, with the aim of better understanding their mesoclimatic specificities and their expression in the vineyard.
