We consider a number of Russian constructions with two parts organized in parallel so that elements of one part actually implement the semantic valencies of a predicate appearing in the other part. A vivid example of these constructions is the maxim that conveys one of Igor Mel?cuk?s basic principles: «?, ? ? ? ?, ? ? ?» ?flies must be separated from burgers?, lit. ?one needs that flies are (located) separately and the burgers separately?. This means that both valencies of ? ?separately? are instantiated here: ?what? and ?from what?, even though it may seem that only the ?what? valency is instantiated and that for some reason it is instantiated twice. The paper also addresses other Russian constructions with a similar effect. | |
