The aim of this project is the theoretical design and characterization of new advanced materials useful for the manufacture of high efficiency photovoltaic solar cells and with optoelectronic properties improved in comparison to the conventional semiconductor materials used today in the manufacture of devices for an efficient photovoltaic solar energy conversion. We design theoretically, using state of the art ab-initio calculations, new intermediate band materials that present three bands near the Fermi level by generating an additional intermediate band between the valence and the conduction bands of the host semiconductor. This intermediate band is created to enhance the effective light absorption by allowing the use of additional low energy photons. We propose several materials based on octahedral sulphides semiconductors | |
