This study focuses on Statistical Process Control (SPC) which is a strategy for quality improvement applied to processes that vary about a fixed mean, and where successive observations are viewed as a statistically independent. The aim is to examine the variable ?time of container vessels in port? with control charts. To the authors? knowledge, control charts have not received much attention in ports literature. A methodology based on the Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) statistic is proposed in order to monitor each shipping line in the port of Valencia. The EWMA chart is a type of time-weighted control chart that plots the exponentially weighted moving averages of a process. It averages the data in a way that gives less and less weight to data as they are further removed in time. Each EWMA point incorporates information from all the previous subgroups (or observations) based on a previously defined weighting factor (l). An advantage of EWMA charts is that they are not greatly influenced when a small or large value enters the calculation. By changing the weight used and the number of ?'s for the control limits, the chart can detect almost any size shift in the process. In the future the methodology presented in this paper could be used to track process statistics over time and to detect the presence of special causes. | |
