This paperreportsondesignstudiesconcerningamoderatorconceptwhichaimstomaximizethetime averaged flux. Theideaistoprovideneutronspectrashowingtwoclearmaxima,withpeaksat ð?1 ÅÞ and ð?2:5 ÅÞ arising fromleakagefrombothcryogenicandthermalmoderators.Suchaconceptknownas a bi-spectralmoderator (Mezei, 2006[1])whileprovenonareactorsourcehasonlybeenexaminedfor the ESS2003proposal.Filgesetal.(2003[2]),whichfeaturedadifferentdesignthanthecurrentESS. This paperthusreportsonabaselinedesignforsuchamoderatorconceptandshowsthatitcanprovide substantial gainsincountratesforthoseapplicationsnotrequiringhighresolutionintime-of-flight. | |
