The appearance of Wikipedia represented an enormous technological leap forward for all kind of users in having reference resources at hand, despite the possible inaccuracies that collaborative works can have. Translators greatly benefitted from this multilingual, free-content encyclopedia at the touch of a key. Dbpedia was developed to turn this encyclopedic content into structured data as a project promoted by the World Wide Web Consortium, in the new Semantic Web era. The purpose of this lecture is to show how the conceptual approach underlying Dbpedia brings to the fore the traditional view to terminology and, at the same time, how Dbpedia integrates the new possibilities that web-based multilingual, multimodal resources can offer to terminologists and translators. To conclude, some of the problems as well as the advantages of this multilingual resource for translation and terminography work will be discussed. | |
