Abstract
The present proposal was founded in previous results in multifunctional ceramics and the proposal will focus in a depth understanding of the role of crystalline defects in non-linear properties. For such purpose the amount or involved researches increases in order to adequately afford different ceramic systems. Our hypothesis is that selected optical active cations at low concentration can be used as markers for bulk and/or grain boundaries in ceramics (bulk and/or surface for nanoparticles). These markers will be used to reveal the influence of crystalline defects on the electric-magnetic-optical properties. In addition markers will serve to trace pathways during ceramic sintering process. The proposal deals with different processing routes to obtain from nanoparticles to dense nanostructure ceramics with different crystal defects, size effects and dimensionality. In this study the influence of the starting particles characteristics to consolidate different defects in dense ceramics will be afforded in order to clarify their role on ferroic properties. This knowledge allows us to develop new dopant strategies to tailor properties, e.g., crystal lattice strain, microstructural stress, electronic transitions, conductivity, polarization, photoluminescence or magnetic properties...in order to obtain unique multiferroic ceramics. For practical reasons the study will focus in selected materials in which the groups showed expertise and international recognition as: semiconductor nanoparticles, giant dielectric constant ceramics, lead free piezoelectric and magnetoelectrics. Coupling properties as electric transport-optical response, electric transport-magnetic order, polarization-magnetization, will be pursuit in ceramics and composites.
