The UPM subproject of X-SHEAKS aims at looking at the Floating Offshore wind turbine hydrodynamics from the experimental point of view, in order to provide validation data for the numerical modelling. To this aim an experimental campaign will be carried out which will assist in the validation of the advanced numerical tools for platform design for renewable energy extraction in deep water developed jointly by the other two sub-projects. At the same time, experimental studies also allow to obtain a deeper knowledge of the hydrodynamics of these platforms and address challenges in measuring mainly second order effects as well as hydrodynamic damping. These effects will be specifically targeted. Furthermore, this subproject includes a task that discusses issues related to the economic impact in terms of production costs of the platform design improvements made with the system, key aspect to be considered to allow this type of energy to be competitive with other conventional sources. | |
