Unfortunately dust explosions in silos are still common in different kind of industries. Standards EN 14491 (2006) and NFPA 68 (2007) provide recommendations to size vent areas in order to protect against potential explosions. However, more research is needed partly due to the unaffordable costs that still may represent the vents in some situations for silos. Tests have been carried out in a full-scale test silo, cylindrical and modular (5m3, 10 m3 and 15m3). In each test, an explosive atmosphere was generated by the injection of dust (wheat flour) using three pressurized bottles with nozzles distributed along one generatrix of the silo. An electric spark, produced by a chemical igniter, induced the explosions. Pressures developed inside the silo where then registered using four piezo-resistive pressure sensors. Tests were carried out using different silo volumes and vent sizes. | |
