Abstract
The delivery of visual media providing depth perception of the observed scene seems to be one of the key elements in the current evolution of audiovisual systems. For example, it has arrived to the consumer market in cinemas and is going to arrive soon to the home through television. The driving forces are the Hollywood majors on one hand and the strong development of new home-sized 3D displays on the other hand. So, unlike previous attempts towards depth perception, a mature technology is now available providing excellent quality. However, there is an even growing demand of new research and development to help advance new depth perception based applications: worldwide standards for 3D video, methods for 2D to 3D conversion, common quality measures for 3D, media adaptation to the new displays, etc, just examples of a large set of opportunities. So, this project aims at pushing forward the technologies involved in three-dimensional image and video processing algorithms for analysis and encoding making contributions in the areas of acquisition, characterization, compression, delivery, and visualization of audiovisual media providing depth perception. Stemming from this main objective, several topics helping the enhancement of 3DTV are considered. These topics have been chosen to correspond to on-going lines of research of the project team. Activities within the acquisition and video analysis cover camera autocallibration, detection and tracking of significant elements, scene characterization, conversion of 2D media to 3D media, and extensions to mobile operations. On representation there is a main focus on multi-view and 3D video encoding as the main alternatives for the compression of 3D media and, on distribution, smart content delivery, error protection and quality evaluation are the targets. Finally, there are several tasks on visualization to achieve free view-point display. As the project also looks for internationalization, there will be an important coordination effort with other national and international research groups and an active participation in standardization bodies, mainly in MPEG. Additionally, the technical contributions of the project will be integrated into a 3DTV system allowing the testing of the combined modules as well as helping in the dissemination of the outcomes of the project.
