When the composition is changed by the gradual substitution of an alkaline ion (such as Na+) by another alkaline ion (such as K+), usually the glass properties which depend on the mobility of the modifier ions show a non-linear behavior, acquiring either a maximum or a minimum value at a certain level of substitution. This is commonly associated with the occurrence of processes of viscous flow, ion exchange, electric conductivity, dielectric loss, chemical attack, and mechanical or thermal relaxation, and it is more pronounced at larger differences in the radii of the exchanged alkaline ions. This phenomenon is known as ?Mixed Alkaline Effect? [1]. A similar phenomenon is observed when an alkaline cation is substituted by a non-alkaline cation having the same valence, which is known as ?Mixed Ion Effect?. It is also known that the addition of alkaline- earth modifier cations (such as Mg+2, Ca+2, Ba+2 or Sr+2) affect considerably the ?Mixed Alkaline Effect? occurring in a glass, and although the literature [2-3] gives some examples of anomalies (non-linear behaviour) observed on the properties of some glasses as a result of the gradual substitution of an alkaline-earth modifier by another oxide of the same nature, only very recently the existence of a ?Mixed Alkaline?Earth Effect? has been recognized [4]. The aim of this work is to study of ?Mixed Alkaline?Earth Effect? in a new family of glasses of general formula: 0.8[xBaO(1-x)MgO]0.2TM.2TeO2 with TM (transition metal)= Nb2O5, V2O5, MoO3 and WO3. These new materials will be characterized by impedance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, AFM, density measurements, etc. We are interested in finding out how are affected the material properties mainly with the partial change in the ratio Ba/Mg and which is the influence of transition metals (Nb, V, Mo and W). | |
