| Medieval stonecutters followed a method based on the use of templates and the conception of the constructive details as a result of the movement of these templates in space. They developed different solutions in order to express their skill and their clear conception of the management of templates. Guillem Sagrera and Simón de Colonia¿s works prove this, as they take advantage of the procedure and express it in the final form. Consequently, the forms became more complex and free by just using in a more skillful way the same method for laying out that had been already developed in the first phase of Gothic architecture. Templates were used in order to lay out keys, tas-de-charges, piers with twisted shafts and decorative motifs. In the case of piers the procedure was quite direct, just giving the templates a spin. Despite the result seeming to be very complex, the method of achieving them was astonishing simple. Furthermore, in Germany, stonecutters devised different solutions for decorative elements and constructive details using templates. The interest in and taste for intersections led to the continuation of moldings in places where they was not expected. It was usual that the moldings changed their direction in the bisector of corners, windows, doors or cornices of classical architecture; however, in Gothic corners, moldings cross each other and appear again. In other cases, the outline of the templates can be seen as the end of a molding, abruptly cut. It also happened in some tas-de-charge, where the ribs did not penetrate directly into the mass of the wall; they sometimes ended partially outside. The stonecutter knows perfectly how to use the procedure and express it. The study of Late Gothic vaults and the development of practical experiences in the workshops make it possible for us to understand how the stonecutters conceived these formal and technological solutions. | |
