Abstract
The influence of the secondary or backup protection for estimating voltage sags severity in power systems is assessed through the combined use of the Monte Carlo technique and the SARFI-curve index, considering the most used compatibility references as: ITIC, IEC 61000-4-11, and SEMI-F47. The generation of the voltage sags registers is developed through a short-circuit simulator which involves five stochastic variables: (i) fault rate, (ii) fault impedance, (iii) fault type, (iv) location, and (v) fault clearing time, evaluated in a virtual long-term monitoring simulation through the Monte Carlo sampling method. The effect of the fault clearing time on voltage sags severity is analyzed and the results of the SARFI-curve index are jointly studied in three power networks, two IEEE test networks (24 and 118 busbars) and the national power network of Ecuador (357 busbars).
