Abstract Thick films of ZnO-based varistors have been prepared by tape casting technology. This technique lets obtain dense thick films with high microstructural homogeneity and therefore reliability and reproducibility in the electrical response. The manufacture of varistor thick films with electrical response comparable to bulk varistor shows a critical problem; the excessive volatilization of Bi2O3 during sintering step at high temperature, due to the exaggerated area-volume ratio of these devices. Consequence of Bi2O3 volatilization, the electrical response of thick film sintered at high temperature is very far from the electrical response of bulk ceramics. If the sintering of thick films at high temperature is carry out in Bi-rich atmosphere, the electrical response obtained is comparable to bulk ceramics, with high values of non-linear coefficient (a ~ 40) and very low density current ( J < 0.01mA/cm2). This result is innovative in the preparation of varistor like thick film. | |
