This paper presents a study of harmonically oscillating heave plates for floating offshore wind turbines. The prototype (1:1 scale) platform consists of a circular heave plate of diameter 20 m matched to a column of 7 m diameter and 24 m height. A 1:20 scaled model was tested and results were reported in an earlier paper by the last author(Lopez-Pavon et al., 2014). This paper reports on a new study conducted at University of Maine on a 1:80 scaled model. Forced oscillation experiments were performed at three different KC numbers, and at different oscillating frequencies ranging from one to five times the natural frequency of the platform. Results for added mass and damping coefficients are presented and compared at the two model scales. This comparison is then used as a basis for discussion on the full-scale prototype performance. | |
