Single walled carbon nanotubes are anisotropic nanoparticles that may cause modifications in the electrical and electro-optic properties of liquid crystals. The control of their concentration, distribution and reorientation in these selforganized fluids open for the possibility of modifying the liquid crystal properties at will. The alignment and reorientation of carbon nanotubes have been studied in a system where the liquid crystal orientation effect has been isolated. Complementary studies including Raman spectra, microscopic inspection and impedance studies have been carried out. The results reveal ordered reorientation of the nanotubes by the electric field even when the liquid crystal molecules orientation remains unaltered. Moreover, impedance spectroscopy suggests a non-negligible anchoring force between carbon nanotubes and liquid crystal molecules. | |
