Alignment data of already-built highways are essential for the analysis of safety-relevant issues on certain sections, thereby enabling more valuable highway inventories to be produced for highway operation and maintenance. However, as-built alignment data may not be available or reliable. Several authors have addressed the problem of estimating geometric parameters of horizontal alignment using different data sources, such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) tracking and satellite imagery. The deduction of geometric parameters of vertical alignment, however, has been broached by far fewer authors. This study discusses how to extract the vertical alignment parameters through grade data. The result of the research is software that enables automatic processing of the data surveyed, regardless of whether the source is a set of grades or a set of points. | |
