Where are the limits for the fusion-relevant SiC/SiC composites?

Abstract
In comparison with other candidate structural materials for future fusion reactors, the key advantage of the SiC-based composites is that they allow significantly higher operating temperature range for structural parts enabling higher coolant temperature and consequently higher reactor efficiencies leading to a more economical energy production. In comparison with tungsten, for which embrittlement at low temperature and recrystallization and creep at high temperature represent the limiting parameter, SiC retains its fracture strength and toughness well beyond 1000 °C. Further, low specific weight, non-magnetic character and low neutron cross-section, gives the preference to SiC over other candidate structural materials. If densified without conventional sintering aids (e.g. B, Al2O3), low neutron activation is also ensured. On the other hand, the limiting characteristic of SiC-composites is thermal conductivity, which is very high for the pure SiC, but is greatly affected by the porosity, particles size, crystallinity and presence and properties of secondary phases.
