This paper highlights the importance of incorporating aspects of daily life in teaching chemistry in the different educative levels. Various educational tools (problems, experiments, questions, etc.) developed by the author are summarized. These tools include topics such as the cooling of wat er in a porous earthenware pitcher; the use of exothermic processes in ?self -heating? beverages; the stoichiometry of medicaments, mineral waters and other commercially available products; the influence of the temperature in the kinetics of the osmotic hydration of legumes soaked in water; or the thermochemistry of domestic boilers, among others. The main goals are to promote students and teachers motivation, to facilitate the use of innovative educative tools (especially for problem and inquiry based learning), to encourage critical thinking and to cooperate in the civic education of students. | |
