| In the frame of Geography, place names are not only fundamental geographic identifiers in cartography and in territory, but they also constitute a source of geographic information of enormous value. Place names designate and, eventually, describe the place they refer to and they provide explicit information about it. But each name also codifies specific information about the territory that may only be detected and analyzed in its particular context, through the individual analysis of every toponym. Each place name is tied up with a specific and unrepeatable idea of a place. Consequently, in their function as geographic information, place names are a tool for geographers in their task of reading and analysing places. This paper is aimed at achieving a better understanding of the boundaries of toponyms as a geographical information tool from a geographical perspective. Thus, toponymic information is addressed through the way it is collected, interpreted and transmitted by the citizen, by fieldwork, ethnographic and documentary archive analysis and surveys and mental maps respectively. It is deemed necessary, first, to highlight the importance of relocating place names as a subject of study within modern Geography. From a number of paradigmatic examples, the validity of toponyms as an information tool is demonstrated. The ability of place names to influence the meaning of territorial discourse when talking about a certain place is tackled. A categorization and evaluation of the relationships citizens establish with the place names they use is then proposed.
