The agricultural sector, regardless whether it is developed on low-, mid or high-income countries, it remains vulnerable to external shocks, especially to climate change. Impact assessments of climate change upon the economy of rural household are however scarce especially in middle- or high-income countries. Most studies have focused on the effects of climate change on agriculture at the global, regional or national level, which perform well in estimating average impacts, but can be misleading for some households. This means that ignoring heterogeneity may mask the effects of climate change at the household level. This study assesses the economic effects of climate change on agriculture at micro-level scale, considering the heterogeneity of farming system of four communes of the Maule region of Chile. First, we construct a typology through multivariate statistics to capture variability farming systems. Then, we calibrate a farm household model to 5 household-types previously clustered and simulate potential effects of climate change. Our results indicate that at the aggregate level, there will be substantial economic impacts of climate change on the regional agricultural income. On the other hand, the analysis at the household level provides detailed results on a farm household scale and capture heterogeneity across households. The results at the household level show that small-scale farmers will be the most vulnerable to climate change impacts especially those that depend on rain-fed agriculture. This tool will guide local policy makers so that more vulnerable agents dependent on agriculture can be appropriately targeted in research, development or policy decisions addressed to cope with climate change. | |
