The main objective of this paper is to test whether mushroom prices could be significantly different for distant areas in mushroom markets, or rather that a convergence process in prices exists. The law of one price states that similar goods present similar prices in different markets. This hypothesis is tested in two local markets, both for wild mushrooms (Lactarius deliciosus), cultivated mushrooms (Pleorotus ostreatus and Lentinula edodes) and champignon mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus), respectively. Empirical data for prices are obtained from the Madrid and Barcelona Central Markets, with a weekly frequency, for a time period between 2002 and 2015. The study used the multivariate testing method of Johansen VEC model. Results indicate that wild mushroom markets are well connected, and that variations in saffron mill cap prices across the Madrid and Barcelona markets are very small, and in line with the law of one price. Nevertheless, completely different results are obtained for cultivated mushrooms and for champignon mushrooms, in which significant differences are found among prices in local markets | |
