In this contribution we study the evolution of charged droplets of a conducting viscous liquid under the influence of an external electric field. We have implemented a boundary element method to solve numerically the PDE system (potential equation plus Stokes system) that models the drop behavior. In the paper we explain in detail the numerical approach and we give some results showing that when both external electrical field and total drop's charge are sufficiently small, prolate spherical shapes develop according to Taylor's observations. On the contrary, for sufficiently large charges and/or external electric fields a selfsimilar cone-like singularity develops in a mechanism different from Taylor's prediction. | |
