In the year 1950, the Estonian born architect origin but settled in the United States, Louis I. Kahn, thanks to the scholarship from the American Academy of Rome, comes into contact with the old European architecture, within the values of the classical tradition. The discovery of the city of Rome in the United States through a trip to the past of buildings of a timeless nature [1], and the order of the project of the Yale Art Gallery, which he began to sketch in Italy, suppose the discovery of the concept of mass, of ruin, of an architecture that emerges as a transfer received from The Enlightenment. In this way, a monumental architecture that will be reflected in his projects emerges after his trip to Rome, influenced by a classical geometry, and referenced to a human scale, where man is the center of the universo. Louis I. Kahn architecture is completely unrelated to the modern movement of the early twentieth century. This is visible in a series of buildings that are presented as monuments and remain exactly in the same location nestled in the same nature for centuries, in a geometry of unstoppable stillness where the Silence and the Light command, in an emphatic architecture that does not scream, homogeneous, monolithic, that almost does not speak. | |
