Nowadays, two main classes of materials are used in the production of CAD/CAM restorations: ceramics and resin composites. These latter materials are commonly recommended because of their quick fabrication, easy reparation and increased crossed link density compared with conventional light/chemical cured for direct composites. This study aims to determine the microstructural and mechanical properties of three commercial resin-based materials available for CAD/CAM-processed indirect dental restorations. Lava Ultimate, Crios Brilliant and Cerasmart specimens were physically and mechanically tested under two conditions: a) directly from the manufacturer presentation and b) after immersion in artificial saliva for 30 days. Density, hardness, nano-elastic modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness were determined. In addition, the composition and the microstructure of each material were analysed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to establish the relationship between the microstructure and their macroscopical mechanical behaviour. Lava Ultimate exhibited slightly higher mechanical properties, while the decrease of its mechanical performance after immersion in artificial saliva was doubled in comparison with Crios Brilliant and Cerasmart. Tests of pristine material showed 150 MPa flexural strength, 1.0 MPa.m1/2 fracture toughness and 1.0 GPa hardness for Lava Ultimate, 140 MPa flexural strength, 1.1 MPa.m1/2 fracture toughness and 0.8 GPa hardness for Crios Brilliant and 140 MPa flexural strength, 0.9 MPa.m1/2 fracture toughness and 0.7 GPa hardness for Cerasmart. Clinical interpretation of these results could suggest, in general, a better behaviour of Lava Ultimate compared with the other two. | |
