In this chapter, we provide a brief description of various types of distributed generation (DG) and technical regulations related to interconnecting DG into the distribution grid. We also provide a review of the current status of compensation schemes available to DGs. Then, we will present the obstacles and challenges that prevent DGs from participating on a level playing field with other conventional generators in the setting of both the traditional utility and the current electricity markets, which are succinctly introduced. We will also provide potential solutions that can be used to overcome these challenges. For example, one of the challenges is that most of the DGs are located at the distribution system while the wholesale markets operate at the transmission level. One of the potential solutions that we will propose includes a market mechanism to properly account for the energy output from DGs rather than as behind-the-meter generators (out of market). | |
