o perform tests in reduced models is a didactic tool widely used when teaching structures. In the Department of Structures and Building Physics (DEFE) of the School of Architecture (ETSA) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) they have been widely used in the last 40 years. The experience presented here is included in this line of work and aims to study the strains that an arch must experience before collapsing. To do this, it is possible to record the movements of the voussoirs using high-speed videos, to discover the configuration prior to the collapse and, above all, the settlements and displacement necessary for it to occur. The arches are made with pieces of wood, so that the same arch can be reused as often as necessary. The students perform the tests, moving the supports in several directions, which allows us to define the set of possible movements for one of the supports. The tests are repeated for different types of arches with different number of voussoirs and different slenderness. In this way, the collapse process can be understood for different configurations. | |
