In order to dimension a structure in case of redundancy, were you to proceed with an elasticanalysis, the structure must be totally defined, for the efforts are determined in relation to the relative rigidities of the cross sections. The safety verification is conducted for the most solicited point. As the cross sections are determined, and the efforts are calculated from them, the procedure works in order to validate but usually not for invalidation. Plastic analysis, where collapse does not happens when the resistance limit for a single given point is reached, allows to follow a different strategy, not interested in he rigidity of the cross-sections but in their resistance. The efforts are chosen in order to calculate the cross sections, just the other way around. This article presents the use of the plastic approach teaching Building Structures in the Department of Building Structures and Physics (DEFE is its acronym in Spanish) at Technical University of Madrid (UPMisits acronym in Spanish). | |
