This paper adopts the existing attitudinal market segmentation approach by incorporating a new bicycle experience category designated commuter ?Bicycle-taxi? (observed mostly in middle-sized sub-Saharan cities). Doing so, it would be able to have a more inclusive analysis of individual socio-economic characteristic, current travel behavior, their perception, motivators and attitude towards cycling. A survey was conducted on 1085 individuals, regular commuters in Quelimane. The study revealed a wider range of cycling experiences in sub-Saharan Africa than in developed countries, suggesting a much deep perception to provide a different treatment of each class. These segments have a very important influence when designing policies and strategies, particularly customized to protect and promote cycling in Quelimane. Results show that perception cycling indicators like accident rate, absence of convention place for parking and change clothes after cycling, bicycle thief and climate factors were reported to have negative influence in all cycling segments. Urban policies to promote cycling might first target those indicators and those experiencing cycling indirectly or as passengers, since they are the most dominant segment and have enormous influence on the total urban traffic. | |
