Despite there is a growing concern on walking accessibility variations to major activities according to socio-economic characteristic of population, limited attention has been paid to the group of seniors. This paper gains insights into this issue by studying if walking accessibility levels to retail among seniors are uniform (or not), and identifying specific time-willingness thresholds where the walking accessibility levels to retail could significantly vary within that population group. The city of Granada in the south of Spain served as case study. First, a questionnaire was disseminated between population over 55 years old, exploring its willingness to reach three types of retail (daily, weekly, and incidental) on foot. Second, a clustering process was used identifying four socio-economic groups: ?non-motorised seniors?; ?motorised seniors?; ?older seniors?; ?younger seniors?. Third, a comparison of time-willingness decay functions to reach retail on foot between the four socio-economic clusters was completed, and its walking accessibility levels was mapped by using a gravity-based model. Results revealed that the walking accessibility to weekly retail for the ?younger seniors? is significantly different to the rest of clusters, fundamentally for time-willingness slot to reach retail on foot between 20 and 30 min. It closes with some reflections on the implications of the obtained findings for policy-making. | |
