Descripción
Biofuels is promoted as a good mitigation measure against climate change. However, its sustainability is questioned both for food security reasons and also because of its ambiguous contribution to human well-being. In Ecuador, the pilot project ?Jatropha for Galapagos? (JFG) aims to progressively replace diesel with jatropha oil, to produce electricity on the Galápagos Islands. To this end, actors from two rural areas are involved, the Jatropha suppliers in Manabí province and the bioelectricity users in Floreana Island in Galápagos province. This paper analyzes the social sustainability of the JFG project through the proposed methodological framework "Multi-Level Social Life Cycle Analysis" (ML-SLCA), which leads to identify the actors' vulnerabilities and the project contributions to the actors. Summarizing, the vulnerabilities are identified through the multi-level social indicators comparison, while the project contributions are identified from stakeholders' surveys. These two elements allowing to determine major social impacts, which are later, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals to confirm the progress of the fulfillment of the commitments acquired by Ecuador with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Results reveal that the most of the social impacts are positive and contribute to the fulfillment of the SDGs. Nevertheless, there are also negative impacts which limit the development to the social sustainability. In this regard, jatropha suppliers were identified as the more vulnerable actors, and they can mitigate their vulnerability to poverty through the additional incomes obtained by jatropha sell; while jatropha electricity users are directly favored from the social impacts generated by the bioelectricity. Additionally, negative impacts such as the informal participation of the children and rural women in harvesting activities require attention and a more in-depth analysis. Finally, in order to improve the social sustainability of the project and to exploit its full potential, it is important to consider the following key factors: strengthened of social capital, women's empowerment, increase of children?s education and suppliers' association with their communities.
