FANT is the acronym of Enhanced Thermal Neutron Source (Fuente Ampliada de Neutrones Térmicos, in Spanish). The system is made of moderator material with a Am95241/Be49 neutron source of intensity 5.83±0.14 x106 s-1. Externally, FANT is a parallelepiped box of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with dimensions of 90 x 70cm2 base area and 76 cm height. Internally, it has a cylindrical irradiation chamber with dimensions of 70 cm long x 32cm Ø. The 241AmBe neutron source is housed in the chamber, with a shadow cylinder placed between the irradiation area and the source to take advantage of moderated backscattered neutrons. The moderation process is effective allowing to obtain thermal fluence rates from 1100 cm-2·s-1 to 1400 cm-2·s-1. The device was previously optimized by Monte Carlo calculations with MCNP6.1 code. A Bonner Spheres Spectrometer (BSS) with LiI(Eu) detector has been used to determine the neutron spectrum, using NSDann Ver 4.0 and BUNKIUT spectral unfolding codes. This work is describing the complete experimental characterization of the neutron field inside FANT. The measurements were made in the neutronics hall of the Neutron Measurement Laboratory of the Energy Engineering Department of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (LMN-UPM). The main feature of the obtained neutron spectrum is the high thermal neutron component and the significantly high fluence rate values. | |
