The bearing capacity of the rock mass can be estimated by different calculation methods (numerical, analytical, abacuses?); and it is usual that the bearing capacity is verified by more than one method to ensure the safety of the structure. The assumptions adopted in different methods are diverse resulting in differences results. One of the examples of these differences is in the case of the numerical calculation by the FDM and the analytical solution due to consideration of distinct failure instants; numerically the failure is reached after the performance of the stress path; while the analytical solutions only need the condition of the stress state at failure. Therefore, in the numerical calculation failure mechanisms that are different from the theoretical ones can occur. In the present paper, these failure mechanisms and the results obtained in the calculation of the bearing capacity for a shallow foundation on a rock mass are analyzed. | |
