Nowadays, the mitigation of space debris represents a challenge which will become more important in the next years. Significant research activity on this matter has been conducted recently. Some of the proposed solutions involve electrodynamic tethers, since they are promising devices which allow to generate electrodynamic drag allowing to descent satellites without propellant consumption. In this paper, the approach to tethers is novel since they are considered as energy exchanging devices. From this point of view, the possibility of profit from the decay process of space debris is explored. Therefore, we focus on the power generation during the descent trajectory, establishing the dissipation sources of mechanical energy and studying different tether configurations. Numerical simulations have been carried out in order to support the theoretical results and to point out the performances of that system. | |
