Occupational noise levels have been assessed in 122 different workstations belonging to 17 opencast mines (gravel pits and quarries) within the Madrid Region. The measurements were carried out in accordance with current European legislation: Directive 2003/10/EC on the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risks arising from physical agents (noise), and Spanish legislation: Real Decreto 286/2006. In order to determine noise levels, different measurement techniques were employed, using integrating averaging sound level meters, sound analyzers, and personal sound exposure meters. On the other hand, the worker¿s use of hearing protection devices was also registered. Here, the relatively low usage rate of hearing protectors could be observed, given that 54% of the workers assessed do not use any kind of hearing protection. The LEX,8h values obtained from LAeq,T measures, and LCpk values, have been categorized according to the different kinds of installations (limestone quarries, granite quarries, gravel pits, clay quarries, and cement works) and they were compared with the limit values stipulated in current legislation. The results show that 90.2% of the 122 workstations assessed exceed a LEX,8h value of 80 dBA, and in a 75.4% of the cases the 85 dBA noise level is exceeded. | |
