From a legal point of view, the new 2003/10/EC Directive has made it necessary to take into account the noise reduction provided by the hearing protectors, as well as complete information regarding the assessed noise characteristics in order to establish the exposure limit values. By using personal sound exposure meters it is not possible to carry out this calculation with a single measurement of daily A-weighted (LEX,8h) noise exposure levels, given that it is also necessary to have C-weighted noise levels. Occupational noise measures in 17 opencast mines in Madrid region (Spain) have been carried out over a two year period. As result of these measure campaigns, the sound exposure in each workstation has been established. However, numerous problems related with the use of personal sound exposure meters in this kind of industries have also been detected. These are mainly related to the breakage of microphones due to knocks, dust entry in connections and microphones, lubrication water splashes, and casting of rock fragments. In this paper, the specific limitations using personal sound exposure meters for the assessment of occupational noise in the mining industry are discussed, together with the limitations derived from the Directive 2003/10/EC which has come into force. | |
