We report the application of optical slot-waveguide micro-ring resonators to a label-free surface binding assay of protein concentration. We employ a fabrication method that enables the combination of integrated optical systems with on-chip fluid handling, without compromising the functionality of either part. Utilizing a selective isotropic plasma etch of a sacrificial chromium etch-stop layer, fluidic connections are made down to buried nanostructured optical sensing elements in a controlled manner. Slot-waveguides are a recent development in the field of integrated optics. They allow the concentration of light in a sub wavelength low refractive index slot running along the axis of the guide. Since biological samples are water based, and water has a low index compared to solids, this new waveguide type is of particular interest for refractive index biosensing. | |
