Abstract
The response of the base metal to the welding process involves chemical and structural modifications, which are finally materialized by strains and stresses developed in the welded joints. The different chemical compositions and structures of the base metals and of the filler metal, and also the thermal cycles in the zones adjacent to the welding pool have an important influence on the final quality and mechanical characteristics of the heterogeneous welded joints. Several specific issues concerning dissimilar metals welding and the welding process influence on the structural modifications (type and granulation) are presented in this paper. Low carbon steel - stainless steel and low carbon steel - copper joints are used for the analysis. This kind of joint is frequently found out in chemical, petrochemical and food industry. Considerations on the structural modifications, the influencing factors and final conclusions of the studies are presented.
